The Word Became Flesh

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

In Judah God is greatly feared,
in Israël his Name is known,
his tent in Salem he hath reared,
in Zion fixed his royal thrown.
 —Psalm 76:1
Suggested tune: Rockingham (LM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.
—John 1:14

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
In what way did he come but this, The Word was made flesh, and lived among us? Just as when we speak, in order that what we leave in our minds may enter through the ear into the mind of the hearer, the word which we have in our hearts becomes an outward sound and is called speech; and yet our thought does not lose itself in the sound, but remains complete in itself, and takes the form of speech without being modified in its own nature by the change: so the Divine Word, though suffering no change of nature, yet became flesh, that he might dwell among us.
—Augustine of Hippo

TODAY'S PRAYER
I thank you, O Christ, that you took on my flesh that, through the Holy Spirit, I might be one with you as you and the Father are One...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
