Such a Messenger

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

O gates, lift your heads, ageless doors, lift them high:
The great King of glory to enter draws nigh!
O who is the King that in glory draws near?
The Lord, mighty God of the struggle, is here!
 —Psalm 24:7-8
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
What then will this child become?
—Luke 1:66

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
John was to go forth as the Lord’s messenger, to bring to humanity the light of God. He must give a new direction to our thoughts. He must impress us with the holiness of God’s requirements, and our need of his perfect righteousness. Such a messenger must be holy. He must be a temple for the indwelling Spirit of God. In order to fulfill his mission, he must have a sound physical constitution, and mental and spiritual strength. Therefore it would be necessary for him to control the appetites and passions. He must be able so to control all his powers that he could stand among people as unmoved by surrounding circumstances as the rocks and mountains of the wilderness.
—Ellen White

TODAY'S PRAYER
God our strength and our hope, grant us the courage of John the Baptist, constantly to speak the truth, and boldly to rebuke vice; in Jesus' Name...
.

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
