A Shining Light in My Conversation

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

His covenant he kept in mind
throughout all ages past.
That covenant forevermore
shall undiminished last.
 —Psalm 105:8
Suggested tune: Capel (CM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
The word of God came to Zechariah's son, John, in the wilderness.
—Luke 3:2b

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I wish that I could be as the Baptist, both a burning light in my sermons, and a shining light in my conversation, lest my works give the lie to my words; while I, as Mercury, direct others in the right way, but walk not in it myself. Gregory of Nazianzus said of him that was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, that he was all voice, a voice in his habit, a voice in his diet, a voice in his conversation.
—George Swinnock

TODAY'S PRAYER
Lord, enable me in all things so to show myself such a pattern of good works to other people, to be such an example to other believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity, that I may be able to say to them, as Paul to the Corinthians, "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ"...
—George Swinnock

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
