Spears into Pruning Hooks

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

I'll trust God's word, and so resist
the hatred others raise.
To thee, O God, my vows are due;
to thee I'll render praise.
 —Psalm 56:10-12
Suggested tune: Morning Song (CM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
—Isaiah 2:4

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Within each of our hearts are spears and swords which are aimed at our neighbors. The slightest word or action might cause us to unleash them in an unkind word or a petty, vindictive act. But just as nations turn their weapons into farm implements when the people of God are gathered together, so can we as individuals, by God's grace, transform our benighted emotions into impulses to love and to work for justice. Only let us pray that God can help us recognize within ourselves that which is wrong, and in recognizing grant us the grace to overcome.

TODAY'S PRAYER
Help me to find the hatred and vengeance that lurk within my heart, O God, and recognizing it, may I transform it by your strength into an implement of nurture and peace...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
