The Hope of Believers

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

Search, O God, try my thoughts and heart,
if mischief lurks in any part;
Correct me where I go astray,
and guide me in thy perfect way.
 —Psalm 139:23-24
Suggested tune: Abends (LM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
—Jeremiah 23:5

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
When comfort is promised in affliction, especially when the deliverance of the church is described, the banner of faith and hope in Christ is unfurled. And whenever mention is made by the prophets of the renovation of the Church, the people are directed to the promise made to David, that his kingdom would be for ever. And there is nothing strange in this, since otherwise there would have been no stability in the covenant. The hope of believers was ever treasured up in Christ alone.
—John Calvin, Institutes 2.6.3

TODAY'S PRAYER
Fix my heart, O Lord, on you, that amid the changes and chances of this mortal life I may be kept steadfast and immovable, ever abounding in your work...
—F.B. Meyer

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
