The Service of Humanity

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

Of mercy's never-failing spring
and steadfast justice I will sing;
and since they both to you belong,
to you, Lord, I'll address my song.
 —Psalm 101:1
Suggested tune: Duke Street (LM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?
—Luke 13:16

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
What better place than a house of worship could there be for a miracle of mercy? The service of humanity is best built on the service of God, and the service of God is as truly accomplished in deeds of human kindness done for his sake as in oral worship. The religious basis of beneficence and the beneficent manifestation of religion are commonplaces of Christian practice and thought from the beginning, and are both set forth in our Lord’s life. He did not substitute doing good to people for worshiping God
 —Alexander Maclaren (alt.)

TODAY'S PRAYER
You have made my neighbor in your Image, O God. May I see in them the face of your Son, and may I follow your Son's example by serving my neighbor...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
