The Substance Belongs to Christ

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

I'll hear what God the Lord will say:
Peace to his people he'll convey;
to godly ones he's promised this,
if they refrain from foolishness.
 —Psalm 85:8
Suggested tune: Mendon (LM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Do not let anyone condemn you in matters of food and drink or of observing festivals, new moons, or sabbaths. These are only shadows of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
—Colossians 2:16-17

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
In the midst of every headline, every event, is the lurking Good News of God as Jesus Christ, who is the very Good News of God for the brokenness of the world. God's News has always been Good, has always been personal, has always been eternally effective.

God's News is not like a stock market index what goes up one day and down another; neither is it a temporary salve to ease pain and discomfort. God's News is Good because it is God's own self-offering, the gift of God's self as Jesus Christ, for the life of the world.

TODAY'S PRAYER
In the midst of our lives and of t his world, there you abide, loving Lord. Yet, I'm so overwhelmed and inundated, I often forget you are here. Keep my heart fixated on you. Direct my attention to all the places that you are at work, healing this broken world and healing me. Thank you for offering yourself to us for the life of the world...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
