From the Rising to the Setting

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

Forever I will give you thanks,
and what you've done proclaim;
in presence of your godly ones
I'll wait on your good Name.
 —Psalm 52:9
Suggested tune: Marlow (CM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
The time is surely coming, says the Lord, when the one who plows shall overtake the one who reaps, and the treader of grapes the one who sows the seed; the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it. I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant them upon their land, and they shall never again be plucked up out of the land that I have given them, says the Lord your God.
—Amos 9:13-15

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
In what sense has this promise of God come been kept? We see this when we come to Christ; for it will then be evident that nothing has been in vain foretold: though the Jewish people have not ruled as to the outward appearance, yet the kingdom of God has been propagated among all nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun. Further, what is here said of the abundance of corn and wine, must be explained with reference to the nature of Christ's kingdom. As then the kingdom of Christ is spiritual, it is enough for us, that it abounds in spiritual blessings.
 —John Calvin (alt.)

TODAY'S PRAYER
God, faithful and true, make me eager with expectation as I look for the fulfillment of your promise in Jesus Christ my Savior...
 —NZ: Anglican

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
