To Fit Us for Our Work

Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
Our souls, when prey to pain and fear,
refuse to taste the choicest meats;
then we, by faint degrees, draw near
to death's cold and unfriendly gates.
But straight to God's indulgent ear
we then our mournful cries address,
who graciously vouchsafes to hear,
and frees us from our deep distress.
 —Psalm 107:19-20
Suggested tune: Sweet Hour (LMD)

Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.
—1 Kings 19:7
Do not so much applaud yourself in your present comfort, as labor to improve it for the glory of God. ‘Get up and eat,’ said the angel to the prophet, ‘otherwise the journey will be too much for you.’ The manifestations of God's love are to fit us for our work. It is one thing to rejoice in the light of our comfort, and another to go forth with the Spirit's power comforting us. The proud spend their time talking about money merely to show how rich they are. But the wise use their money for their own betterment and the betterment of others. Those who boast of their comforts will lose what they have, while they that improve their comforts in trade and communication add more to what they already have.
 —William Gurnall (alt.)
I have miles to go before I sleep, O God. Give me bread for the journey that lies ahead, that I may know that you are the source of my strength, and that I may spend my strength in your service...
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
