How Can You Turn Back?

Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
O gates, lift your heads, ancient doors, lift them high!
The great King of Glory to enter draws nigh!
O who is the King that in glory draws near?
The Lord, mighty God of the struggle is here!
 —Psalm 24:7-8
Suggested tune: To God Be the Glory (

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits? How can you want to be enslaved to them again?
—Galatians 4:8-9

You were once wandering in shadows. But how disgraceful is it that in the midst of light you should fall into such gross errors! The main inference is, that the Galatians were less excusable for corrupting the gospel than they had formerly been for idolatry. But here it ought to be observed that, till we have been enlightened in the true knowledge of one God, we always serve idols, whatever pretext we may throw over the false religion. The lawful worship of God, therefore, must be preceded by just views of God's character. Every object of worship which humans contrive is a creature of their own imagination. In human opinion, idols may be gods, but in reality they are nothing.
 —John Calvin (alt.)
Dear Savior, keep me from fashioning you after my own imaginings. May I not make any idol or image of you, but know you as you are...
 —F.B. Meyer
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
