As Well as Some Women

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
How great, O Lord God, are thy works!
How deep thine ev'ry thought,
which heedless folk do not realize,
and fools acknowledge not.
 —Psalm 92:5-6
Suggested tune: Capel (CM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.
—Luke 8:1-3

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
It is not insignificant that Luke gives names to some of the women who followed Jesus. It was only recently that history began naming any but the most significant women. And in Jesus' day, women were denied many rights that today all people take for granted. This short passage should cause us to pause and think about all those in the history of the church and of the world who were left unnamed, but who nonetheless served faithfully. We flourish because of the seeds they planted, and the fruit we bear will plant the seeds of future ministries and testimonies.

TODAY'S PRAYER
I thank you, Lord, that in baptism you have bound my name to your Name. Whether future generations remember me or not, in you I will never be forgotten...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
