Nowhere to Lay His Head

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
O Lord, I love your dwelling place;
your house is my delight.
The place in which your glory dwells
is lovely in my sight.
 —Psalm 26:8
Suggested tune: Marlow (CM)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
—Luke 9:58
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Where has he nowhere to lay his head? In your faith. For in your heart foxes have holes, for you are full of guile; in your heart birds of the air have nests, for you exalt yourself. Full of guile and self-elation as you are, how can you follow Christ? How can a guileful person follow Simplicity?
 —Augustine of Hippo (alt.)
TODAY'S PRAYER
The foxes found rest
            and the birds their nest
        in the shade of the forest tree;
    but thy couch was the sod, O thou Son of God,
in the deserts of Galilee.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus;
    there is room in my heart for thee.
 —Emily E. Elliott
YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
