The Whole Grace of Our Renewal

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
By limits you set,
the waters are bound,
lest they should return
and cover the ground.
You make springs gush forth
in the valleys below,
and cause rushing streams
through the mountains to flow.
 —Psalm 104:9-10
Suggested tune: Lyons (10.10.11.11)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
The Lord has redeemed his servant Jacob! They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split open the rock and the water gushed out. “There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
—Isaiah 48:20-22
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Water as a metaphor for the Spirit is very frequent in scripture, for we are like dry and barren soil: there is no sap or rigor in us until the Lord water us by his Spirit. God brings the secret energy by which he restores life in us, and maintains and brings it to perfection. Though some explain this water as referring to the gospel, I think that the metaphor includes the whole grace of our renewal.

TODAY'S PRAYER
I thirst!—O God, great Source of Love!
Infinite life streams from above.
O, give one drop, and let me live!
The barren world has naught to give;
no solace have its streams for me;
I thirst alone for heaven and thee...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
