The Hope of Better Progress

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
In the land the righteous settle,
dwelling in it endlessly,
for the whole land in the future
their inheritance will be.
Words of wisdom speak the righteous,
justice comes from out their lips;
since God's law within their hearts is,
in their steps they never slip.
 —Psalm 37:29-31
Suggested tune: Beecher (87.87 D)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
—John 16:12-13a

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
When he says, 'You cannot bear them now,' his object is to encourage the disciples by the hope of better progress, that they may not lose courage; for the grace which he was to bestow on them ought not to be estimated by their present feelings, since they were at so great a distance from heaven.
 —John Calvin
TODAY'S PRAYER
Help me not to judge your power or your love by my present feelings, O God. Forgive me when I assume that my current desires are your will, or confuse my wishes with the hope that you have placed within me...

YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
