Noble Things

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.
For I know how great the Lord is;
our Lord is above all gods.
Yes, the Lord does what he pleases
in the skies, earth, seas, and floods.
He it is who lifts confusion
from the ends of earth and sea,
who with lightning brings the rain down,
from his store the wind sets free.
 —Psalm 135:5-7
Suggested tune: Beecher (87.87 D)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. O simple ones, learn prudence; acquire intelligence, you who lack it. Listen, for I speak of noble things; and from my lips comes what is right, for my mouth will utter truth.
—Proverbs 8:4-7a

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If reading and meditating on the word of God are the parents of prayer, then before you pray in the morning, first read a chapter of God's word. Then meditate on it awhile, remembering all of the noble things you read there.
—Lewis Bayly, The Practice of Piety
TODAY'S PRAYER
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ...
 —Book of Common Prayer
YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
