Come Down, O Love Divine

CALL TO PRAYER
Repeat and or meditate on this verse until your thoughts are centered on God.

I'll sing to the Lord
as long as I live,
sing praise to my God
while life he will give.
My thoughts about him
will sweet pleasure afford,
for I am rejoicing
each day in the Lord!
 —Psalm 104:33-34
Suggested tune: Lyons (10.10.11.11)

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, 'Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?'
—Acts 2:5-8
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The essential fact of Pentecost is neither the sound and fire, nor the speaking with other tongues, but the communication of the Holy Spirit. The mighty rushing sound has died into silence, the fiery tongues rest on no heads now, the miraculous results of the gifts of the Spirit have passed away also, but the gift remains, and the Spirit of God abides for ever with the church of Christ
 —Alexander Maclaren
TODAY'S PRAYER
Come down, O Love divine;
seek out this soul of mine
and visit it with your own ardor glowing.
O Comforter, draw near;
within my heart appear,
and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing...
 —Bianco da Siena, tr. Richard Littledale
YOUR OWN PRAYERS
Allow the above to help guide your own confession, praise, thanksgiving, and/or petition.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
 —Matthew 6:9-13
