Prepare the Way

A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."
—Isaiah 40:3
How blest are they that undefiled
and straight are in the way;
who in the Lord's most holy law
do walk, and do not stray.
—Psalm 119:1
Suggested tune (Winchester Old):
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.
—Luke 2:4-5
Prepare the way before him;
prepare for him thy best.
Cast out whate’er offendeth
this great, this heav’nly Guest.
Make straight, make plain, the way:
The lowly valleys raising,
the heights of pride abasing,
his path all even lay.

The humble heart and lowly
God lifteth up on high;
beneath his feet in anguish
the haughty soul shall lie.
The heart, sincere and right,
that heeds God’s invitation
and makes true preparation,
it is the Lord’s delight.

Prepare my heart, Lord Jesus,
turn not from me aside,
and grant that I receive thee
this blessèd Christmastide.
From stall and manger low
come thou to dwell within me;
loud praises will I sing thee
and forth thy glory show.
—Valentin Thilo
Today, O God, the souls of your feet have touched the earth. Today, the back streets, the forgotten places have been lit up with significance. Today, the households of earth welcome the King of heaven. For you have come among us; you are one of us. So may our songs rise to surround your throne as our knees bend to salute your cradle. Amen.
