I Am the Gate

I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God.
—Ezekiel 34:15
Know that that the Lord is God indeed,
without our aid he did us make;
we are his flock, he doth us feed,
and for his sheep he doth us take.
—Psalm 100:3
Suggested tune (Old 100th):
I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
—John 10:9
Christ, revealed and exhibited in the gospel, is the lowest step of  the ladder, and comes near to everyone, that they may set the foot of faith upon it, in order to climb to glory. This ladder is the gate of heaven: I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved. I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. By faith in his atoning blood we enter into the holy of holies. At the death of Christ the veil was rent from top to bottom, and the way to the holiest laid open, that we, through the human nature of the Son of God, (rent in two by justice), might enter with boldness.
—Ebenezer Erskine
Great Shepherd of thy chosen flock,
thy people’s shield, our shadowing rock,
once more I hearken to thy voice,
once more before thee I rejoice.

Now may thy Spirit, by the Word,
refresh my weary heart, O Lord,
wearied of earth’s vain strife and woe,
and longing more thyself to know.

Thine is the heart my grief to feel,
and thine the love each wound to heal;
home thou art gone for us to care,
returning soon to take me there. Amen.
—John Newton, alt.
