Be Steadfast

CALL TO PRAYER
You gave your good spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and gave them water for their thirst.
—Nehemiah 9:20
PSALM
People bring forth food by working the earth;
and wine that they grow their heart fills with mirth;
to make their face shine they extract fragrant oil
and bake bread that strengthens the heart for more toil.
—Psalm 104:15
Suggested tune (Hanover):
TEXT OF THE DAY
Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
—1 Corinthians 15:58
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Let this beget patience: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us [Rom 8:18]. Heaven will pay for all. And let it also beget diligence: Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain [1 Cor 15:58]. Be always pressing on, because of the high prize of your calling. The thought of the prize should excite us to diligence.
—Thomas Manton
MORNING PRAYER
Jesus, my Savior, let me be
more perfectly conformed to thee;
implant each grace, each sin dethrone,
and form my temper like thine own.

My foes, when hungry, let me feed,
share in their grief, supply their need;
the haughty frown may I not fear,
but with a lowly meekness bear;

and the poison heart and tongue,
the hand outstretched to do me wrong,
excite no feeling in my breast,
but such as Jesus once expressed.

To others let me always give
what I from others would receive;
good deeds for evil ones return,
nor when provoked, with anger burn. Amen.
—Benjamin Beddome
