Take an Inventory

Lord, help me.
—Matthew 15:25b
Bow down thine ear, O Lord, and hear,
for I am poor and great my need.
Preserve my soul, for thee I fear;
O God, thy trusting servant heed.
—Psalm 86:1-2
Suggested tune (Brynteg):
Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord. Let us lift up our hearts as well as our hands to God in heaven.
—Lamentations 3:40-41
Because we are rational creatures, human beings have the power to exercise consideration. We do so about many things, so why not about our souls? If we have the ability to take an inventory of our business, why not of our eternal concerns? Refusal to do so is criminal negligence. Even in our natural state, we possess the faculty of memory and are obligated to put it to the best use. So let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord—failure so to do is a willful negligence.
—Arthur W. Pink, alt.
Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my heart and mind, for your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to you. O Lord, I love the house in which you dwell, and the place where your glory abides. Do not sweep me away with sinners, for I walk in my integrity: Redeem me, and be gracious to me, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
—from Psalm 26
