Shadows & Substance

CALL TO PRAYER
From new moon to new moon, and from sabbath to sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, says the Lord.
—Isaiah 66:23
PSALM
To God our Strength, to Jacob's God,
a song and shout now raise!
With psalm and timbrel, harp and lute,
awake to joyous praise!
At each new moon the trumpet blow
for solemn festal days.
—Psalm 81:1-3
Suggested tune (Irons):
TEXT OF THE DAY
Therefore do not let anyone condemn you in matters of food and drink or of observing festivals, new moons, or sabbaths. These are only a shadow of what is to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
—Colossians 2:16-17
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The contrast between 'shadows' and 'substance' ...is not one of falsehood (the realm of appearances) and eternal truth, but of promise and fulfillment.
—Michael Horton, The Christian Faith
MORNING PRAYER
Give me grace, O Lord, to live in the freedom of your Spirit, beyond rules and regulations. Deliver me from life in the shadows to the fullness of the body of Christ. Amen.
