The Gospel Was Made for the Poor

CALL TO PRAYER
O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before.
—Joel 2:23
PSALM
The heights shall bring prosperity,
the hills bring peace by righteousness;
he'll judge the poor, the wronged set free,
defeating those who them oppress.
—Psalm 72:4
Suggested tune (Shropshire):
TEXT OF THE DAY
The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.
—Matthew 11:5
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
This is the standing miracle of the Gospel. False religions seek their votaries among the rich and powerful. The Gospel was made for the poor. It is adapted to their capacities and their wants. If the rich receive it they must come down to a level with the poor. They must lay aside their "gold and pearls and costly array" and be clothed with humility. In all ages the greatest triumphs of the Gospel have been won among the poor.
—Benjamin Titus Roberts
MORNING PRAYER
Make us worthy, Lord, to serve those throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them, through our hands, this day their daily bread, and by our understanding love, give peace and joy. Amen.
—Teresa of Calcutta
